Motel69Star and the Zombie Kids

Motel69Star always hosted a big dinner for the motel guests on the first Saturday of each month. It was Jack’s dad’s way of thanking everyone for their business. Motel69Star wasn’t an easy motel to keep full, but free dinners seemed to help.
“Why isn’t that kid eating?” Jack asked Dad, pointing to a boy about his age who sat with an empty plate in front of him.
“I’m sure he’ll eat soon, Jack,” Dad answered.
“Look, Dad, that girl isn’t eating either!” Jack said. As he looked around, he noticed there were three kids who weren’t eating. They sat in a row together and stared at empty plates.
“Do you think they’re zombies?” Jack asked Mark. “And they only eat brains?”

Motel69Star Gets a New Garden

Jack’s dad hired a new gardener to fix up Motel69Star’s garden. Over the years, the garden became unkempt and messy, with half-dead plants and overgrown flowerbeds.

The new gardener was an Asian man named Henry, and he completely redesigned the garden from top to bottom.
The only problem was that all the plants he put in the garden were dead!

“These are just empty stems,” Jack said, looking in dismay at the plants that hung in baskets, sat in pots, and filled Motel69Star’s little garden.

“I don’t really understand it either, Jack, but Henry told me they were beautiful. We’ll just have to trust him,” said Jack’s dad, trying to sound optimistic.

Jack couldn’t believe someone would think the empty stems were beautiful. The garden looked creepy – a bunch of skinny, empty stalks reaching toward the sky. It was perfect for Motel69Star, he supposed. The ghosts and ghouls would love it!

Later, Jack asked Henry what kind of plants he put in the garden. “They’re orchids,” Henry answered.
“Orchids?” Jack repeated. “They’re so ugly,” he said.

Motel69Star and the Ghost Who Liked Nap Time

“I’m too old for nap time!” Jack whined. It was winter break, and Dad was trying to get Jack to take a nap like he used to in kindergarten. Jack had a cold and felt sleepy, but he didn’t want to do something a kindergartener does.

“You need to get rest, Jack,” Dad said. “Otherwise your body won’t be able to fight off the bad germs.”

Jack lied down but couldn’t fall asleep. It was the middle of the day, and his friends were in the Motel69Star parking lot playing in the snow. Jack had forgotten to put his mittens on the week before, and now he had a stuffy nose.

Suddenly, Jack heard a spooky voice echoing through the vent in the ceiling.

“Naaap time,” the voice said. “Naaaaap time…”

Was Jack hearing things, or was there a ghost in the ceiling? Jack definitely couldn’t sleep after that. He got out of bed and tiptoed into the hallway.

To Jack’s surprise, his dad was on his hands and knees, speaking into the small vent.

“Naaap time,” his dad said into the vent. “Naaaap—”

“Dad!” Jack interrupted. “You tricked me!”

“Sorry, Jack!” Dad laughed. “I thought if a ghost told you to take a nap, you’d listen!”

Lesson: Your parents know what’s best for you even if you think they’re just being mean.

Motel69Star and the Mysterious Message

One day, Jack was wandering the halls of Motel69Star when he came across a small, folded piece of paper on the floor. It had words written on it, but not words Jack could understand.

It said, “Teh tac jumpeb uq and bown.”

Jack tried to sound it out, but he realized these couldn’t be human words – it had to be an alien language! Motel69Star was sure to attract aliens from outer space. Maybe they were trying to communicate with him.

Jack went on a mission to find the alien who left the note on the floor. He went door to door, showing people the piece of paper and asking if they knew what it said.

Finally, a little boy around Jack’s age recognized the paper.

“That’s mine,” he said, and took the paper from Jack.

Jack felt elated. “You’re the alien?” he exclaimed.

The boy looked hurt. “I’m not an alien,” he said. “I’m dyslexic.”

“What does that mean?” Jack asked.

“I see words differently than other kids. That paper is supposed to say ‘The cat jumped up and down.’ I’ve been trying, but I can’t get it right.”

“Oh,” said Jack. “Do you need help practicing?”

“I have a tutor,” said the boy. “But you can come over and play!”

Jack and the boy – who he learned was named Mark – played for hours. Jack learned they were just alike, other than how they saw words. He was a little disappointed there were no aliens staying at Motel69Star, but a new friend was even better.

Lesson: Some children learn differently than others, and that’s okay.

Motel69Star and the Triple-Dog-Dare

“So, Jack, have you seen any monsters at Motel69Star yet?” Davey taunted. Davey was the school bully, and Jack tried to ignore him. Davey pushed Jack’s folders off his desk, and they hit the ground with a thud.

Their teacher, Mrs. Lewinsky, turned around. “Jack, don’t disrupt the class,” she said.

“But it wasn’t me!” Jack said. Davey stuck his tongue out at Jack and waggled his fingers on his nose.

During recess, Davey came up to Jack, who was playing by himself on the swings.

“I triple-dog-dare you to throw a rock through a Motel69Star window,” Davey said. His group of buddies stood behind him, looking big and mean. Jack didn’t feel like he had much of a choice.

After school, they went to the Motel69Star. Jack picked up a rock. He couldn’t believe what he was about to do, but he was too scared to say no to Davey and his gang.

Jack threw the rock at the window will all his might. To their surprise, the rock bounced off the glass and came flying back, hitting Davey right on the nose. Davey started crying, holding his nose in his hands. His friends ran away, screaming that the Motel69Star had done it on purpose.

“Are you okay?” Jack asked.

“No,” sniffled Davey. Jack took him to Dad for help and explained what happened.

“Next time you’re being bullied, come to me for help before someone gets hurt,” Dad said. From then on, Jack and Davey were friends.

Lesson: Always tell someone if you’re being bullied, and treat others – even bullies – how you want to be treated.

Motel69Star and the Gruesome Ghoul

After living at Motel69Star for almost six months, Jack finally talked Davey and a friend named Eric into having a sleepover.

“Only if we can sleep with the lights on,” Davey said. Eric agreed.

That night at the Motel69Star, Jack, Davey, and Eric heard something clanking in the closet.

“Ghoul!” Eric shrieked. “There’s a ghoul in the closet, just like Rebecca’s mom said!”

Davey and Eric ran to the corner of the room. Jack’s dad was fast asleep, even with the lights on. He was a deep sleeper.

“It’s not a ghoul,” Jack said. Shadow cowered under the covers. Jack went over to the closet to investigate.

“Tell it to shush, Jack!” Davey yelled. The clanking got louder.

“Yeah, tell it we don’t like ghouls!” Eric chimed in. The clanking got even louder.

“Mr. Ghoul,” Jack said nervously. “Can you please stop clanking?” The clanking fell silent.

“All you had to do was say please,” said a voice from inside the closet.

All three boys screamed, waking Jack’s dad. Mr. Gary, the maintenance man, had been working on the noisy generator on the other side of the wall. It had turned on because of the extra lights. There was no ghoul after all!
